The Best of 2009

Happy New Year!!! 2010 promises to be an exciting and fascinating year for shoe enthusiasts. Next week we will post our predictions for the hottest shoe trends of 2010 but right now we have to give 2009 a proper good-bye.  So many trends, where to begin! The best shoe trends of 2009...

 Best Comeback

Julia Roberts Pretty Woman boots
2009 saw the return of the thigh high boots. Rescued from the 80's trends of big hair, too much make-up and grotesque shoulder pads, which are also making a comeback- hopefully in moderation.  This time around the boots are made to look chic and worn in a none-hooker like way. Leather and suede ruled the runways paired with mini skirts or pants and always with confidence. Celebrities embraced the look and the trend quickly turned into a frenzy, but be careful, these aren't for everyone.  The thigh high isn't very big at the thigh and squeezing into one is not attractive. Most are meant to fit at the mid-thigh so if you're 5 feet tall you might have a hard time finding the right pair. Lastly, the thigh high has evolved into a respectable pair of boots so if you have a pair of Pretty Woman thigh highs, leave them in your closet.

Best Accessories

Metals have never been so precious. Studs, chains, spikes, zippers and buckles turned old designs into new shiny must haves. The trend of accessorizing shoes brought out the best in designers. Some got a little carried away with all the pretty shiny things but for the most part the end products were fantastic.

Best Mutation

The biggest hit of the year was the open-toe bootie.  A half-bootie half-sandal mutant that made women cry tears of joy.  Here's a trend that every woman can wear and look great in- the reason why we love shoes! This design was used in conjunction with the metal craze to create some fierce show stoppers. We love this trend the most because the bootie can be used year round!

Best Futuristic Look

Hollywood was stuck in the future with movie after movie taking place sometime in the not so near future.  And designers were thinking the same way with their extravagant creations of heel-less pumps, floating platforms and artful heels. These designs were a hit on the runway but some don't translate to streetwear. Either way it's a glimpse into what the future holds for shoe enthusiasts. Our favorite is the floating platform which can actually be worn by regular human beings.

Best New Concept

The cage boot was the most original concept of the year that turned into a popular trend that will possibly become a fixture in future collections. The YSL cage boot was the first that came to our attention and then the look caught on like fire.

Most Popular Shoe of 2009

The YSL 'Tribute' sandal was, by far, the most popular shoe of 2009. These sandals were everywhere, seen on everyone, and practically impossible to find at any retailer this past Spring. Celebrities like Lauren Conrad, Ashley Simpson, Eva Langoria-Parker, Beyonce and many more were seen in the 'Tribute' sandals. The hefty price tag sould have been enough to deter some buyers (not the celebrities mentioned above), but the beauty of this classic sandal was too much to turn down. Soon after the craze, Steve Madden, in a brilliant move, came out with the exact shoe at a much affordable price. The quality, of course, isn't the same but it's hard to distinguish between the two if side by side. The sandal is available in many colors, fabrics, and textures and still available at retailers like Neiman Marcus, Bluefly.com and Net-A-Porter.com from $716.
