 Q&A With Stuart Weitzman

Stuart Weitzman was born into the shoe business. His father, Seymour, created Seymour Shoes (also sold as Mr. Seymour, in the 50s) with a factory in Massachusetts.  Mr. Weitzman learned the art of pattern-making and designing from his father and learned business at the Wharton School of Business. When his father died, Mr. Weitzman and his brother took over the family business. They were forced to move operations to Europe when the industry ended in America. In Spain the brand became Stuart Weitzman, a luxury line of shoes and handbags with a global following of shoe obsessed women.

Today Mr. Weitzman designs and creates more than 300 styles of shoes and handbags a year. He is both the designer and businessman behind the very successful brand, which sells in over 45 countries. His designs are worn by celebrities on the red carpet and moms running errands. His inspiration is the modern woman and for her he creates designs to suit every lifestyle and personality.

ShoeSeen.com had the opportunity to ask Mr. Weitzman a few questions about his Spring/Summer collection, Spring trends, designing for women and the Spanish team behind his brand.

What was your inspiration for designing the Spring '10 shoe collection?
As always...the modern woman

What do you think will be the hottest shoe trends of Spring '10?
Clogs, peep-toe booties, wedges and translucent shoes

What is your favorite shoe of the collection? Why?
It is difficult to choose a favorite-as they are almost like my children-but for spring I do have a soft-spot in my heart for my new jelly collection. With today's modern technology, I am able to create such functional shoes using the jelly material which are fashionable and easy to wear.

What do you hope to see more of in Spring '10?
Mid-heels...after seasons of extreme platforms it is nice to give women a trendy fashionable
alternative at the other end of the spectrum.

Why did you choose to manufacture your shoes in Spain?
Ever since a group of shoes made in Elda caught my eye with their exceptional quality and
workmanship...it became my home. Our entire team from sewers to partners gives their all to the product and treats it as if it's their own. It's quite unlikely that I could have established
such camaraderie elsewhere.

Your father taught you about shoe-making, but did you learn something from the Spanish
that has been incorporated into the way Stuart Weitzman shoes are made today?

I am one of the few designers who is also a pattern-maker, so I personally see my products
through the entire manufacturing process. The Spanish manufacturing methods have taught
me how to ensure the best quality and craftsmanship for each product.

Is there something about the manufacturing process that can only be achieved in Spain?
Making shoes in Spain does not disclose any unique secrets, but their talent and experience
work well for me, no need to look elsewhere.

What do you think of the growing popularity of Spanish shoe designers/production?
The current generation of Spanish designers are the first to grow up after the Era of Franco.
Their creativity, which is quite natural to the Latin psyche of Spain, is now able to finish again.

What is the most important consideration when designing a woman's shoe?
Beauty without sacrificing comfort

What should women look for when purchasing a high quality shoe?
A shoe that compliments her personality, and feels like it can be worn all day.
