Get to know Ruthie Davis

By Ana Agado

You may not know Ruthie Davis by name, but if you bought a pair of Uggs because they were cute and trendy then you were one of the tens of thousands of women who fell victim to Ruthie’s marketing and design genius. She’s very modest and won’t openly boast about putting the brand on the international map, but the facts speak for themselves. Uggs was strictly a surfer brand before Ruthie tweaked the designs by adding the weather proof sole and fashionable fur accents. She placed them on the highly photographed feet of Hollywood’s hottest celebrities, and turned the brand into a household name.

This amazing accomplishment also pushed Ruthie to start her own brand. Ruthie describes her designer brand as a “Manolo Blahnik and Nike hybrid” with designs that are architectural, sleek and comfortable. Ruthie is one of the few women who design high end women’s shoes, so she takes special pains to make sure her designs are sexy and edgy but also cradle your feet in a plush platform. She’s also a New Yorker and as such designs with busy women in mind. This is why she came up with her pumps and flats two-for-one combo which consist of a pair of sexy platform pumps and matching ballet flats. Now your sensible flats match your stylish pumps and you can seamlessly transition from walking shoes to office pumps to night out pumps.

She’s currently busy with the arrival of the Fall 2010 line, which she refers to as the “Vampire Barbie” collection because of its edgy Rock & Roll details juxtaposed with sexy girl glam. Her favorite design this season is the ‘vampire heel’ with a bite that exposes the heel shaft. This detail shows up on several of the collection’s shoes, like the ‘Angelina’, an otherwise classic peep-toe pump. Other hardcore accents to look forward to are the many studs, spikes and double platforms that would sex-up any wardrobe. For those looking for something playful and daring, she also has colorful Mary-Janes in bright fuchsia or red with peep-toe and heel accents.

You might have already seen some of the Fall ‘10 collection on celebrities like Miley Cyrus (‘Angelina’), Beyonce ( ‘Spike’), and Kelly Rowland (‘Pierced’). Even though the brand is relatively young, the shoes are loved by celebrity trend-setters who wear the designs because of their fierce, sporty look and comfort- some even dancing on stage in their Ruthies! Seeing her shoes on celebrities is still so exciting to Ruthie, but she still remembers Maria Bello as the first celebrity to be photographed wearing a pair of Ruthies from the very first collection. Since then, fans of the shoes range from Kim Kardashian to Naomi Campbell, who was recently wearing a pair of ‘Vamp’ pumps for a Dennis Basso ad campaign. Ruthie collaborated with Dennis Basso for his Fall’10 fashion show in NYC and the partnership might continue for the Spring ’11 shows.

Each collection is better than the last for Ruthie Davis, as they continue to evolve with her personal growth. Her designs have what she calls “umph”, a characteristic that legitimizes her shoes as being a solid investment; something she’s hoping will attract buyers in this market. And for next Spring you will be able to invest in a Ruthie Davis handbag which is designed specifically to carry your spare shoes as well as all your usual things. Perfect for carrying the Ruthie Davis two-for-one pumps and ballet flats combo!
